Paul's last letter before he died was addressed to young Timothy. Paul is imprisoned in Rome and he knows there is little chance he will be set free. He wants to encourage Timothy to carry on with the evangelistic work which Paul has ordained him to do. He warns Timothy to stay away from false teachers and urges him to remain faithful even in the midst of suffering.
My dear son! I always recall your faith. Fire it up now!
Be strong, faithful. Suffering for the sake of the elect.
Avoid godless chatter. Pursue holy, useful work.
Terrible times are ahead. So learn well from the Scriptures!
Carry on; for I am close to my end.
Come quickly. I am deserted, but not by the Lord.
