A Review of "Paul in Chains: Philippians"
Pastor Duffy brings to life the apostle as a passionate, afflicted, and genuine preacher and shepherd to the Philippians in this moving presentation, bringing a freshness and immediacy to a letter too often held at arm’s length. Far from a mere recital, Pastor Duffy draws the audience in as if it was gathered in Lydia’s home, hearing these words of encouragement reenacted in “real time.” The apostle’s love for Jesus and those he ministers to shines ‘as stars in the universe as he holds out the word of life.’ Our congregation was impacted (and grateful) for this excellent presentation.
My thanks to you Duffy for your excellent interpretation of the text, your work in memorizing and preparing it in ways that made it fresh and engaging. I was struck by the “with tears” part as you agonized over the lost, including the guard; I hadn’t given much thought to the apostle’s words or his tears. It convicted me of my subtle indifference toward those outside, and the lack of faith it betrays in the urgency and necessity of commitment to the gospel of Jesus.
